The Director of Marketing & Digital Communications is responsible for leading staff in the design, implementation and management of on-line & off-line communication strategies focused on media and industry engagement and promoting SWANA's role as the association leader for resource management. This will be achieved through a multi-channel communications strategy. This position will report directly to the Deputy Executive Director and be a member of the Senior Leadership Team, which is tasked with directing SWANA operations consistent with the strategic plan under the leadership of the Executive Director.
The Director of Marketing & Digital Communications reports to the Deputy Executive Director and supervises the Marketing Coordinator, Website Producer and Graphics Designer.
Primary Responsibilities:
Develop a strategic communications plan that incorporates existing and new messaging and marketing content and determines optimal methods of promotion and dissemination
Work with the Senior Leadership Team and individual departments to develop corporate promotions and communications.
Create, adapt, improve and optimize web communication for SEO and organic and keyword search
Manage corporate branding for the organization including the Applied Research Foundation and SWANA Chapters
Oversee strategy for development of social media profiles and quality content on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
Develop other relevant social media outlets to support and expand our digital presence
Recruit and maintain media partnerships for development of trade-in-kind agreements
Manage public and media relations
Assist in preparing and drafting various communications (email, social media, blogs, etc.) including at times, public commentary for SWANA Leadership
Marketing:
Oversee art direction with creative staff
Create and manage marketing plans for SWANA’s products and services, in collaboration with primary staff responsible for products and services.
Assist the Director of Membership with marketing efforts to grow and retain SWANA Membership.
Manage the relationship with SWANA’s marketing/communications and related vendors.
Create and manage all marketing budgets.
Evaluate metrics and report on effectiveness of marketing efforts.
Email campaign development & implementation
Manage inbound marketing system, including campaign development & data analysis
Develop compelling custom content
Optimize print, social media campaigns to generate awareness, interaction, brand exposure, and new sales
Identify appropriate print and social media channels for targeted campaigns
Transform content to ensure easy sharing via social networks
Build and maintain a strong online reputation for SWANA
Public Relations:
Manage the strategic development and supervise maintenance of SWANA’s website including content and functionality.
Manage media relationships, especially the trade press, to ensure that SWANA is the leading resource for solid waste management and industry safety matters
Manage the execution of advocacy/public relations campaigns.
Communications:
Direct the communication activities of SWANA with both internal and external audiences.
Supervises the development of the content and production of SWANA’s e-newsletter and editorial for MSW Management magazine.
Manage the relationships with outside vendors utilized for communications materials (freelance writers, editor, publishers, printers, etc.)
Evaluate various member communication options and make recommendations to SWANA’s Executive Team.
Manage the creation of the script for the annual business meeting and general sessions.
Manage regular member communications through utilization of a variety of technologies.
Additional Responsibilities:
Recommend additions and revisions to SWANA’s programs/services.
Attend board, assigned committee, and other meetings as required.
Attend SWANA events to provide on-site staffing as assigned.
Required Professional Experience
Minimum 5 Years of Digital Communications experience
5+ Years of Marketing experience
Management of public relations, communications, marketing and/or digital communication teams
Hands-on experience with inbound marketing and marketing automation practices
College degree in marketing, communications or related area
Desired Skills:
Ability to nurture established relationships with media and forge new ones with additional outlets
Expert knowledge in the latest digital and social media technology and channels and how to best leverage for marketing programs as part of an overall strategy
Excellent project and deadline management skills
Proficiency in both MS Office Suite and Mac platform.
Strong copy writing and editing skills
Strong working knowledge of HTML, Email Campaign Systems, Social Media Platforms
Highly motivated, quick-learning, self-starter
Expert English writing and speaking skills
Must provide cover letter, resume, and portfolio of work–including writing and digital samples.
